Making Muscles!

We have just finished studying the Muscular System. To culminate our understanding of this system, the students created each of the 3 types of muscles out of Twizzlers pull and peels and Fruit by the Foot. After creating each type of muscle, the students had to tell me what each muscle was, where it was located in the body, and its function. They loved it!

Making Bones!

We are LOVING our Human Body unit! Recently, we studied the layers of the bone. After studying each layer, the students created their own using paper mache, paper towel rolls, sponges, and yarn. It's fairly easy and a great way to solidify the students' understanding of the layers. Enjoy!

Paper mache: periosteum
Paper towel roll: compact bone
Sponge: cancellous bone
Blue & red yarn: arteries and veins

Novel Studies

Hallelujah, we are on Fall Break!
This is a great time for me to catch up on blogging. So here's what's been going on in our classroom for the last three weeks:
Novel Studies!

We broke up into three groups and each group read a different novel study. The three novel studies we chose for this round were Prince Caspian, Cricket in Times Square, and Liar & Spy. The kids absolutely loved the books! We met every day for 45 minutes to read a portion of the text and complete an activity or discuss the events in the story. At the end of our novel studies (which lasted 3 weeks), students completed a Reading Olympics project. (See my Novel Studies page).

The kids had an absolute BLAST creating their Reading Olympics projects! They worked hard and demonstrated their understanding of the book through plot summaries, character interviews, setting travel brochures, and much more! The students' favorite project was the book buffet, which turned out amazingly.

Check out some of the pictures of the finished projects.

Readers Notebooks

Readers Notebooks

We use our Readers Notebooks almost every day to document what we're learning in Reading and Grammar. Typically, our Readers notebook will include our Super Reader Strategy of the week as well as practice on other reading skills that pertain to our unit study.

In addition to reading, we also practice grammar in our Readers Notebooks. I just purchased an AWESOME packet from TpT created by Foreman Teaches to add a little pizzaz to our grammar lessons.
